RESURFACING TO REMEMBER
In this gallery, includes work from the Resurfacing Series, photo collages, photography and video stills of my journey back to my motherland Philippines in November 2019.
In connection with The Resurfacing Series, is documentation from "RESURFACING : GIGI BIO" Solo Exhibition at Weaving Hand opening on January 28, 2020 & artist talk in Feb 2, 2020. Within the gallery windows of Weaving Hand was a site specific installation of mixed media artwork incorporating photo collage, natural fiber weaving & embroidery inspired by indigenous symbols and auric field patterns inspired by Banig mat weaving of the Philippines.
“RESURFACING TO REMEMBER”
A tribute to my journey back to my motherland, Philippines & reconnection with my ancestral roots with the community. This series began after returning from a family reunion & textile journey learning about indigenous textiles, symbolism & sharing space with cultural bearers and weavers in Mindanao & Ifugao regions of the Philippines from November - December 2019, a divine time before the height of the pandemic & a deep reflection on the sacredness of life.
Resurfacing to Remember is part of an ongoing series called “The Resurfacing Series”, in honor of my ancestors & celebration of culture and community. A divine reflection of myself and kapwa (shared self). A collaboration of the mind & beings along my journey between my motherland & the diaspora. A rebirth & an invitation to uproot, resurrect & rise again to the surface. A shared timeline interwoven in space & connected by ancestral forces. A visual manifestation of ancestral spirits rebirth within me & building a bridge of visions passed to me through dreams, inspired by my life’s migration route & reunion with my past, present & future ancestors.
